Tips for Dog Photos

If your love your pet and Halloween as much as Stephanie loves Psycho then you will understand why we had to wonder around a corn field at The Pumpkin Patch on Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon on a fall afternoon to get creative family photos of these two! We have quite a few people ask if we are ok with pets and we love it when people include pets into family photos. We even get epic clients who bring dogs on their special day. We have taken photos of dogs, a cat, and even a hedgehog. We are just waiting for family session with a turtle or ferret as that would be really unique! We had such a blast getting creative images that showcased Stephane’s love for her dog and all things fall.

We were really excited for the opportunity to play with our MagMod jells during the day in a corn field. We wanted to creative some fun and festively spooky photos and get more experience playing with gels. Gels sit over the flash head (or other light source) and change the color of the flash, these can be used creatively (as used here) or to match other lights in the environment. We took these images in middle of the day, so it was busy. And MagMod lets us work quickly with a little footprint, while still having plenty of options creatively.

Tips for including your dog in a Portrait Session:

  • Make sure you bring a leash as some areas require pets to be on a leash

  • Bring treats to reward your dog for good behavior

  • Bring water and a water container for them

  • Bring poop bags, be kind and pick up after your dog

  • Bring a lent roller for the humans in the shoot

  • If going to a public area go at times that is not busy such as weekdays

  • Pick a shoot location that is free from distractions for your pet such as other pets and children
